Science, Environment and Development (SED) Seminar (2005-2006)
Convener: Prof. William Clark, Science, Environment and Development Group
Description: This seminar explores the interactions among knowledge, environment and development in general, and the challenges of sustainable development in particular. Of interest is research on "knowledge systems" and understanding why the gap persists between what decision makers and development workers want from science and technology (S&T) and what S&T is producing for them. The seminar will consider work on what changes in institutions, procedures, and program design can help to close the gap. We view "knowledge systems" as consisting of networks of linked actors, organizations, and objects that perform a number of knowledge-related functions (including research, innovation, development, demonstration, deployment, and adoption) involved in linking knowledge and know-how with action. The seminar’s primary purpose is to allow participants in the Science, Environment and Development (SED) Group to present research plans and work in progress, providing opportunities for shaping proposals, critiquing ongoing research, and giving and receiving constructive peer review. Most sessions will consist of an initial presentation on the topic of the day, followed by brief commentary on that presentation from a designated discussant, followed by general discussion among seminar participants.
Audience: Graduate students, fellows, research staff, and faculty are invited to join SED Group members in the seminar.
Time and place: Starting 9 February 2006 and unless otherwise noted, the Spring 2006 SED Seminar will meet weekly on Thursdays from 1:30 - 3:00 PM in the Perkins Room at CID, located on the fourth floor of the Rubenstein Building at the Kennedy School of Government.
